The internal keyboard of Android 2.1 is great already. It does its job and supports the voice recognition.
*AnySoftKeyboard* looks promising but in real world use, I found it a bit awkward - esp. switching to numeric keyboard and back.
Also it occupies more screen space. My favorite for now is the *HTC_IME*, a copy of the HTC Sense keyboard. It has various settings,
supports all features of the internal keyboard (and lots more!!) and the compact mode is good for people with manly fingers.

I had K9 in use for a while until I realized I don't need to move mails around to other folders on-the-go and don't use the
few special features of K9. I like the combined Inbox feature of the stock E-Mail app more and also the fact that it shows
mails from my company's Exchange server. The *Google Mail* app makes nice use of GMail's special features and complements the stock E-Mail app.

to all my networks (e.g. AIM, MSN, ICQ, Facebook), I needed a sleek Jabber/XMPP client for Android. *Jabbroid* seems to fit.

It hangs sometimes a few seconds, but in overall, it looks good.

To manually update the firmware, put the new firmware named as `update.zip` onto the root directory of the microSD card.
Then do this: (found at [androidspin.com](http://forum.androidspin.com/showthread.php?t=2631))
- power off the phone
- hold down the trackball and press the Power button.
- you'll get a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards → select *Bootloader*
- now select *Recovery*
- the phone will reboot showing a robot and a warning sign
- now press Power and Volume up together (if it doesn't work the first time, try again)
- now choose *Apply sdcard:update.zip* (use trackball!)
- wait for it to finish
- choose *Reboot now*

To add custom sounds to your Android phone, create the following folders on your SD-card:
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
Now you can put your MP3 sound files into these folders and they will appear upon the tone selection
dialogs. (You may have to wait a while until they appear, maybe even have to reboot the phone.)
On older Android phones, you might have to create the folders `ringtones`, `alarms` and `notifications` in the root
of your SD card. (see [here](http://www.androidforums.com/t-mobile-g1/1757-can-you-set-music-youve-uploaded-ringtone-texts.html))

*[Aptoide](http://www.aptoide.com/)* is like a package manager for Android. It retrieves lists of programs from different repositories and lets you install, update or uninstall these programs.
Here are some repositories to use (mostly from [forum.xda-developers.com](http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697880)):
* <http://aptoide.com/repo>

You might try to download this file `aptoide.myapp` from your Android phone (with *Aptoide* installed!) which should auto-add all repositories:

Android 2.2 (Codename: **Fro**zen **Yo**ghurt) brings a new feature which allows moving apps to the SD card.
Unfortunately this only works for apps which bring a flag to allow this, i.e. not for the current versions.
To enable this globally, activate USB debugging and plug the phone to your computer. Make sure,
you have the Android SDK installed and `cd`'ed to the `tools/`-dir.
Now run
sudo ./adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
Valid values are:
* `0` --- Automatic (app decides, default)
* `1` --- internal memory preferred
* `2` --- storage card preferred
